Quick fix (3 steps before you pay anyone)
- Back up with Time Machine now, even if the Mac still starts. Data loss, not the repair, is the expensive mistake.
- Get a price from Apple's online estimator for your exact model and serial number, then ask one independent shop for a written, itemised quote.
- Compare both against the price table and the repair or replace table. Above one third of a new equivalent, replace.
The price table: what each MacBook problem costs in Canada (CAD)
The table below gives three numbers per problem: what Apple tends to charge, what an independent shop tends to charge, and what a do-it-yourself job costs in parts. Apple's battery numbers are reported figures, the independent and DIY columns are our estimates for 2026, and every price is before tax unless stated. Prices move with the model, the part supply and the exchange rate, so treat the ranges as a sanity check for a quote, not as a quote.
| Problem | Apple (reference) | Independent shop (estimate) | DIY parts only (estimate) | Typical verdict |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Battery worn out | About 209 to 339 (reported, depends on model) | 180 to 280 | 70 to 160 | Repair on Macs under 7 years old |
| Cracked or dead screen | Quoted per model in Apple's estimator; often the highest of the three | 350 to 1,100 | 250 to 800 for a display assembly | Repair if the Mac is under 5 years old |
| Keyboard, trackpad or top case | Often a full top case, priced high | 300 to 700 | 120 to 350 | Depends on age, often repair |
| Liquid damage | Inspection, then usually a board or top case swap | 150 to 1,200 and up | Not recommended | Power off at once, then data first |
| Logic board failure | Whole board swap, priced near the value of an older Mac | 500 to 1,200 | Not realistic | Replace unless Mac is under 4 years old |
| SSD or storage failure | Often a logic board replacement on recent Macs | 150 to 500 on older, upgradeable models | 80 to 250 on older models only | Check backup before anything |
| Fan, port, speaker, camera | Module swap | 120 to 350 | 30 to 150 | Usually worth repairing |
Two things stand out. First, battery and screen account for most real-world repairs, and both are predictable. Second, the expensive tail (liquid, logic board, storage) is where people regret a rushed decision, because the repair cost can exceed the value of the Mac and the data on it can be worth more than both.
If you only want the Montreal local view, see our MacBook repair cost price guide and the Mac repair in Montreal page. This article goes a level deeper: how to read a quote, when a repair is a bad idea, and how coverage and Quebec law change the math.
Why two quotes for the same MacBook can differ by 400 dollars
A quote is the sum of five things: the part, the labour, the diagnostic fee, the warranty length and the risk the shop takes if the repair does not hold. Understanding each lets you tell a fair quote from an inflated one.
1. Part quality and origin
A display assembly can be genuine (from Apple or a donor machine), or aftermarket. Aftermarket panels are cheaper, but brightness, colour accuracy and Liquid Retina or ProMotion features can differ. For batteries, a poor cell can swell, shorten runtime or trigger system warnings. Ask the shop which one is going in. A shop that cannot answer is a shop to skip.
2. The model, more than the year
A 13-inch MacBook Air with a standard display is a different job from a 16-inch MacBook Pro with a mini-LED display. Apple's displays are priced as complete lid assemblies on many models, so a cracked corner can mean replacing the entire assembly. That is why screen quotes span such a wide range.
3. Diagnostic fee
Many shops charge 40 to 100 dollars to diagnose and credit it toward the repair. Others charge it even if you decline. Ask before you hand the Mac over. A diagnostic fee you can see in writing is normal. A vague one is not.
4. Warranty on the repair
Ninety days is common, and some shops offer six months or a year on parts. A cheap quote with no warranty is not cheap, because a second failure is paid by you.
5. Tax and shipping
In Quebec, GST (5 percent) and QST (9.975 percent) are added, so a 300 dollar subtotal becomes about 345 dollars. Mail-in repairs add shipping and insurance. Compare totals, not subtotals.
Symptom to cause to cost: diagnose before you quote
Many "expensive" MacBook problems turn out to be software or a cheap part. A two-minute check can move you from a 700 dollar quote to a free fix, so run it before you visit any shop.
| What you see | Cheap cause to rule out first | Likely hardware cause | Cost tier (estimate) |
|---|---|---|---|
| Will not charge, or charges only sometimes | Cable, adapter or port debris; try another USB-C cable and a wall outlet | Battery, charging port, board | Free to 340 |
| Shuts off at 20 to 40 percent | Run Apple Diagnostics; check battery condition in System Settings | Worn battery | 180 to 340 |
| Black screen but sound or fans work | External display test, brightness keys, safe boot | Display cable or panel | 200 to 700 |
| Lines, flicker or dark patches on the display | Safe mode, new user account, rule out an app | Panel, flex cable | 350 to 1,100 |
| Keys repeating or dead | Compressed air, remove software remapping, test in Safe Mode | Keyboard or top case | Free to 700 |
| Very slow, hot, loud fans | Activity Monitor, storage almost full, dust, old macOS | Fan, thermal paste | Free to 200 |
| Will not boot, question mark folder | Reset, Recovery, startup disk repair in Disk Utility | SSD or board | Free to 1,200 |
| Stopped after a spill | Do nothing until powered off and dried | Corrosion on board | 150 to 1,200 and up |
For the slow and hot cases, our guides on MacBook overheating and how to speed up a MacBook walk through the free fixes. If a Mac is only slow, a repair or replacement is almost never the answer.
Run Apple Diagnostics first (it takes five minutes)
On Apple silicon, shut down, then press and hold the power button until startup options appear, then press Command and D. On Intel Macs, hold D while starting. Write down the reference code Apple Diagnostics gives you. A shop that sees a reference code can quote faster, and you will know whether the machine really reports a hardware fault. Apple documents the codes on its support site.
Screen repair: the most common big bill
Plan on 350 to 700 dollars at an independent shop for a standard MacBook Air screen and 600 to 1,100 dollars for a MacBook Pro with a high-end display; Apple's own price comes from its estimator and is often higher on newer models. These are estimates, not Apple prices.
What changes the price: whether the whole lid assembly is replaced, whether the panel is genuine, whether the damage is only cosmetic (a cracked outer glass is rare on MacBooks, the LCD usually breaks too), and whether the Mac has Touch ID in the top-right key or a sensor in the lid.
Do not do this
- Do not keep using a Mac with a cracked screen for weeks. Cracks spread, and pressure can push glass into the keyboard or trackpad area.
- Do not press a lid closed on a cracked panel with a thick cable or object inside. This is the usual way a small crack becomes a full replacement.
- Do not accept a quote that does not say whether the part is genuine or aftermarket.
Use an external monitor as a pressure valve
If the Mac still works, connect an external monitor and keep working while you shop around. This also lets you back up properly and gives you leverage: you are not rushed into the first quote. For a Montreal-specific view, see MacBook screen replacement in Montreal.
Battery replacement: the repair that usually makes sense
A battery swap is the best-value MacBook repair: about 180 to 280 dollars at a shop and a reported 209 to 339 dollars at Apple (depending on model), versus 1,000 dollars and up for a replacement Mac. Apple's prices are reported through search results and should be confirmed in its estimator. The cheap check is in System Settings, Battery: look at Battery Health and the label that says Normal or Service Recommended. On older Macs, hold Option and click the battery icon in the menu bar.
Signs the battery is the culprit
- Maximum capacity below about 80 percent, which is also Apple's usual threshold for AppleCare+ battery service.
- The trackpad clicks stiffly or the case bulges slightly. A swollen battery is a safety issue, not just a cost issue, so stop charging it and get it checked.
- The Mac shuts down at 30 percent charge or dies when you unplug it.
Safety first
A swollen lithium battery can leak or catch fire if punctured. Do not press on it, do not charge it overnight and do not attempt a DIY replacement if the case is already deformed. Recycle old batteries at a proper collection point. For a step-by-step on charging problems, see our MacBook battery replacement page.
DIY battery swap: is it worth it?
Parts are about 70 to 160 dollars (estimate). The job needs the right pentalobe and Torx screwdrivers, adhesive release for some models, and patience. On recent MacBooks the battery is glued in, and the risk of puncturing a cell is real. If you have never opened a laptop, the 100 dollar saving rarely justifies the risk. If you do go ahead, buy parts from a supplier with a return policy, discharge the battery below 25 percent, disconnect it first and never use metal tools to pry near the cells.
Keyboard and trackpad: cheap fix or surprise top-case bill
A stuck or repeating key is often just debris, but a true keyboard failure usually means replacing the whole top case, which on many models costs 300 to 700 dollars at a shop (estimate). Apple's keyboards are riveted into the top case on most models since 2016, so a single key is rarely replaceable on its own.
Try this before paying: hold the Mac at a 75 degree angle and spray compressed air in a left to right sweep across the affected key, rotate and repeat. Then test in Safe Mode, to rule out a software remap. If that does not work, check whether your model falls under any Apple keyboard service program for 2016 to 2019 butterfly-style keyboards. Those programs had time limits, so check Apple's site for what is still in force before assuming you will pay.
For trackpads, a swollen battery is the most common hidden cause. If the trackpad clicks stiffly or the Mac sits on a table unevenly, stop and check the battery first. A trackpad replaced while the swollen battery stays in place just leads to a second repair. Our guide on MacBook heat and fan problems covers related thermal issues.

Liquid damage: the repair you cannot price in advance
Liquid damage has the widest price range of any MacBook problem: from 150 dollars for a cleaning that works to over 1,200 dollars for corrosion on the logic board, and sometimes nothing helps. Price is driven by what the liquid was (clean water is far kinder than coffee with sugar, or salt water), how fast you powered the Mac off, and how long it sat wet.
The first ten minutes (do this, in this order)
- Hold the power button until the Mac shuts down. Do not wait for a graceful shutdown.
- Unplug the charger and every accessory. Do not try to turn it on "just to check".
- Turn the Mac upside down in an A shape, keyboard down, on a towel. Wipe the outside only.
- Do not use a hair dryer, an oven or rice. Heat can spread the liquid and damage components, and rice does not draw out corrosion.
- Get it to a repair professional within 24 hours. Corrosion starts quickly, especially after sugary or salty liquids.

What to expect in cost
| Scenario | Typical outcome | Cost (estimate) |
|---|---|---|
| Small clean-water spill, powered off at once | Often fine after drying and a check | 0 to 150 |
| Sugary drink, keyboard area only | Top case replacement | 300 to 700 |
| Liquid reached the board | Ultrasonic clean and component repair if possible | 150 to 600 attempt, no guarantee |
| Corrosion across the board | Board replacement or retirement | 500 to 1,200 and up |
IT Cares does not do board-level micro-soldering. In a liquid case our role is guidance: what to do in the first hour, how to protect the data, and whom to take the Mac to. The data question matters more than the repair question in most cases.
Logic board failure: when the repair costs more than the Mac
A logic board repair is only rational on a relatively new Mac or when the board holds irreplaceable data. On most MacBooks over four years old, a 500 to 1,200 dollar board quote is a signal to replace, not repair.
Symptoms that point to the board: no life at all with a known good charger and battery, repeated random shutdowns after a battery swap, display lines that survive an external monitor test, and a Mac that powers on but never shows a startup screen. These can also be an SMC or firmware problem on Intel Macs, so a technician should run basic resets first.
Three honest facts about board repair. Apple often replaces the entire board rather than repairing components, and the replacement price is set near what a similar used Mac costs. Independent board-level repair can be cheaper, but the success rate drops with liquid damage and with newer Apple silicon boards, where memory and storage are soldered. And a repaired board still has the age of the rest of the Mac behind it.
SSD, storage and your data: check this before any repair
On a modern MacBook, storage is soldered to the logic board and encrypted with keys tied to the board. If the board dies, your files may be unrecoverable even though the storage chips are physically fine. That is why a backup matters more than anything in this guide.
- Apple silicon Macs and Intel Macs with the T2 chip: storage is not removable, and recovery after board failure is limited or impossible.
- Older Intel MacBooks (before about 2016): SSDs are often removable, and data can be read with an adapter.
- SSD failure signs: Disk Utility errors, files vanishing, repeated crashes during writes, extremely slow file operations.
Before any repair, back up with Time Machine, or copy Desktop, Documents, Photos and any Mail or project folders to an external drive. If the Mac will not boot, do not run unknown "recovery" software from a search result. Read our guide on data recovery cost in Canada and the explanation of data recovery versus data backup before paying for a recovery quote. Lab recovery on a dead Apple silicon board is a specialist job and is priced accordingly.
Repair or replace? A decision table by model age and repair cost
Use the one third rule: if the repair quote is more than about a third of the cost of a comparable newer machine, and the Mac is past its prime, replace. If the Mac is under three years old, repair almost anything except water-wrecked boards. This is our rule of thumb, not an Apple rule.
| Mac age | Battery or fan (under 350) | Screen or keyboard (350 to 700) | Board or liquid (500 to 1,200) |
|---|---|---|---|
| 0 to 3 years (Apple silicon, likely under coverage) | Repair, check coverage first | Repair | Repair, check warranty and Quebec legal protection |
| 3 to 5 years | Repair | Repair if screen is the only fault | Compare to a refurbished replacement |
| 5 to 7 years (late Intel or early Apple silicon) | Repair for light use | Compare to replacement | Replace |
| 7 years and over (older Intel) | Cheap battery swap only if macOS support is fine | Replace | Replace, save the data |
Three more tests besides price
- macOS support: if the Mac cannot run a macOS version that your browser, banking app or work software still supports, a repair just delays the replacement. See Intel Mac vs Apple silicon in 2026.
- Remaining faults: if the battery is swollen, the screen is cracked and the keys stick, three repairs together equal a new Mac.
- Your use: a Mac used for email and browsing tolerates a repair better than a Mac used for video editing, where speed is the main cost driver.
Our guide to when to replace instead of repairing a computer (in French) covers the same question for PCs and laptops in general.
AppleCare+ in Canada: does the math work?
AppleCare+ for Mac in Canada was reported in July 2026 to start at 5.49 dollars a month or 54.99 dollars a year, with higher prices for larger models; damage service fees were reported at 129 dollars for screen or enclosure damage and 379 dollars for other damage. Only the entry price was confirmed on a page we opened, so confirm all numbers at Apple's checkout. Theft and loss plans were reported as not available in Canada.
| Mac model (reported plan price per year) | Plan cost over 3 years (estimate) | One screen claim saves (estimate) |
|---|---|---|
| MacBook Air 13 inch, about 75 | About 225 | Shop screen 350 to 700, fee 129 |
| MacBook Air 15 inch, about 85 | About 255 | Similar |
| MacBook Pro 14 inch, about 105 | About 315 | Display 600 to 1,100, fee 129 |
| MacBook Pro 16 inch, about 155 | About 465 | Display 700 to 1,100, fee 129 |
Break-even is simple: one screen claim, or one battery service on a plan with battery coverage, returns the plan cost. If you carry your Mac in a bag every day, take it to cafes, or have children in the house, the plan is usually worth it. If it sits on a desk, it often is not. Monthly plans can cost more over time than annual ones, so check before choosing.
Other coverage people forget
- Credit card extended warranty: many Canadian cards add a year to the manufacturer warranty, but they exclude accidental damage in most cases. Read your card's terms.
- Home insurance: some policies cover accidental damage to a laptop at home, with a deductible that is often larger than the repair.
- Retailer plans: check what they include and who actually repairs.
Quebec law and right to repair: what protects you in 2026
Quebec has two layers of protection. The Consumer Protection Act has long said goods must be usable for a reasonable time, and a new warranty of good working order was reported by several law firms to take effect on October 5, 2026, with a three year term for laptops, tablets, phones and desktop computers. We read these details in search results, not in the final regulation, so confirm with the Office de la protection du consommateur.
What was reported: during that period the merchant covers repair costs, including parts, labour and reasonable transport, except for normal maintenance and damage from misuse. The rules also push merchants and manufacturers toward providing repair information in French and designing goods so replacement parts can be installed with common tools. If your three year old MacBook fails without any spill or drop, ask the seller and Apple about this protection in writing before paying for a repair.
What it does not do
- It does not cover a cracked screen from a drop or a coffee spill, which counts as misuse.
- It does not apply the same way to second-hand goods sold privately.
- It does not force a quick answer. Keep your invoice, serial number and written correspondence.
Self Service Repair and DIY
Apple runs a Self Service Repair program in some countries, where you can order genuine parts and rent tools. We could not verify availability in Canada on Apple's page during this review, so check Apple's site for your region before planning around it. Even where it exists, it assumes you can follow Apple's manual precisely, and a mistake with a battery or display cable can turn a 100 dollar part into a 1,000 dollar board. We recommend DIY only for easy items on older models: an SSD swap on a pre-2016 machine, RAM on very old models and a clean of the fans.
How to avoid overpaying: the quote script and the red flags
Ask every shop the same six questions in writing, and compare totals with tax. A fair shop answers all six in two minutes.
- What is the exact fault, and how did you confirm it (a test, not a guess)?
- Is the part genuine Apple, from a donor Mac, or aftermarket?
- What is the diagnostic fee, and is it credited if I go ahead?
- How long is the warranty on parts and labour, and what voids it?
- Will you keep my data private, and do I need to erase the Mac first?
- What is the total with GST and QST, and how long will it take?
Red flags
- A quote by phone for a liquid or logic board problem without seeing the Mac.
- A request to unlock the Mac and leave the password without a written privacy policy. Use a temporary guest account or remove the data first.
- Pressure to decide today, or a price that changes after "opening it up".
- Prices well below Apple's for a screen or battery with no explanation (usually aftermarket parts).
- No written warranty, no business address or no invoice.
Protect your data before drop-off
Turn off Find My only if the shop requires it, and sign out of iCloud when the repair needs a wipe. Back up first. Make a note of the serial number and take photos of the Mac's condition. If your work involves client files, Quebec's privacy law (Law 25) makes you responsible for them even when the Mac is at a repair counter, so use encryption (FileVault) and, ideally, a clean machine for the repair. Our guide on backing up your data (French) is a good starting point.
Three realistic scenarios with numbers
Realistic scenario (illustrative, not a real client). These show how the rules above turn into decisions.
Scenario 1: 2019 MacBook Air, 78 percent battery health, 30 percent shutdowns
The user sees the Mac die when unplugged. Apple's estimate for the battery is around 250 dollars and a shop quotes 199 dollars with a 6 month warranty, and 15 percent tax brings it to about 229 dollars. A new MacBook Air costs around 1,300 dollars, and the old one still runs current macOS. The one third rule says repair: 229 dollars is under 20 percent of a new machine. Result: shop battery swap, backup beforehand.
Scenario 2: 2017 MacBook Pro, coffee spill, will not start
The owner powered it off in seconds but waited two days. A shop's quote is 150 dollars for diagnosis and cleaning, with a possible 800 dollar board replacement. The machine is worth around 300 dollars used. The rule says replace, and the data is the priority. Result: pay the diagnostic only if it includes a data read; otherwise buy a replacement and ask whether the drive can be recovered. See data recovery costs before paying.
Scenario 3: 2023 MacBook Pro 14, cracked screen after a bag drop
The user has AppleCare+. The reported fee for screen damage is 129 dollars, versus a shop quote of 900 dollars for a display assembly. Result: use the plan, pay the fee and keep the original display warranty. Without the plan, the sensible move is Apple's estimate, then one independent quote, and only then a choice.
Budget view: DIY versus a pro, in CAD
| Job | DIY (estimate) | Pro (estimate) | Verdict |
|---|---|---|---|
| Battery | 70 to 160 plus tools | 180 to 340 | Pro unless you have experience |
| Fan clean | 0 to 20 | 80 to 200 | DIY on older models, pro on glued ones |
| SSD swap (pre-2016) | 80 to 250 | 150 to 500 | DIY feasible |
| Screen | 250 to 800 | 350 to 1,100 | Pro, risk of damaging cables |
| Liquid or board | Not recommended | 150 to 1,200 | Pro or replace |
The savings of DIY are real but small compared with the risk of a mistake. A pro who warranties the work is worth the margin on anything glued or soldered.
Repair or replace checklist (screenshot this)
- I backed up with Time Machine or copied my key folders to an external drive.
- I noted the model, year, serial number and macOS version.
- I ran Apple Diagnostics and saved the reference code.
- I got Apple's estimate and at least one written independent quote.
- I asked about part origin, warranty, diagnostic fee and tax.
- I checked AppleCare+, credit card warranty and Quebec legal protection.
- I compared the total to one third of a comparable newer Mac.
- I signed out of Find My or erased the Mac only when the shop required it.
When to call a pro
Call a technician when the Mac will not turn on, has had liquid, shows a swollen battery, or holds data you cannot lose. IT Cares offers remote support and on-site visits in Quebec since 2014. We can diagnose whether it is a software issue, walk you through a backup, help you read a quote and tell you whether a repair is worth it. We do not do board-level soldering and we do not sell parts, so for hardware repairs we direct you to Apple or a trusted partner.
Talk to a technician
Call 1 (888) 711-9428 or book a remote session. Have the model, year and any error message ready.
