SSD failure requires different handling than HDD

Unlike HDDs, an SSD may appear to work fine until it suddenly stops responding entirely. If your SSD shows 0 bytes, enters a locked state, or disappears from BIOS after a firmware update or power outage — power off the system and call us before any further boot attempts. Repeated access attempts on a failing SSD controller can brick the drive permanently.

What Makes SSD Recovery Different from HDD Recovery

Solid-state drives fail differently — require different tools and approaches

Hard drives fail mechanically — read heads crash, motors seize, PCBs burn. SSDs fail electronically and at the firmware level. The NAND flash chips themselves are extremely reliable, but the controller firmware, wear-leveling tables, and translation layer (FTL) are fragile. A power outage during a write, a failed firmware update, or simply a controller chip that overheats can render an SSD completely undetectable — even though all your data is physically intact on the NAND chips.

IT Cares uses specialized SSD recovery tools that communicate directly with the NAND flash at the chip level, bypassing the failed controller entirely. For firmware-locked drives (the most common SSD failure), we access the drive through JTAG or UART debug interfaces to reset the firmware state and extract the mapping tables needed to reconstruct your data. For drives where the controller chip itself has failed, we perform direct chip reading using donor-chip extraction.

Frequently Asked Questions — SSD Recovery Montreal

What does data recovery cost?
SSD diagnostic is $49. Logical recovery (deleted files, accidental format on a detected SSD) is $349. Firmware or controller recovery (0 bytes, firmware-locked, power-loss brick) is $799. Chip-level NAND extraction is $1,499. No-data-no-pay: if we recover nothing, you only pay the $49 diagnostic.
How much does iPhone data recovery cost?
iPhone data recovery starts with a $49 diagnostic. Logical recovery (corrupted iOS, failed update, accidental deletion) is $349. Physical chip-level recovery (broken screen with logic board damage, water damage) is $799. No-data-no-pay applies. See our iPhone recovery page for full details.
Can I recover SSD data for free?
For recently deleted files on a healthy, detected SSD, free tools like Recuva or PhotoRec may work — but only if the SSD is not using aggressive TRIM and you act immediately. For any firmware, controller, or 0-byte failure, do NOT use DIY tools — you risk permanently bricking the drive. Our $49 diagnostic tells you your options before you commit.
Can you recover data from a Samsung 990 Pro or WD Black SN850X?
Yes — we recover data from all major NVMe drives including the Samsung 970, 980, 990 Pro, WD Black SN750, SN850, SN850X, Seagate FireCuda 530, SK Hynix P41, Kingston Fury Renegade, and Crucial T500/T700. Both PCIe Gen 4 and the newer Gen 5 drives are supported.
My SSD shows 0 bytes or is not recognized — can you recover it?
Yes — this is one of the most common SSD failure patterns and is typically a firmware-locked or controller state rather than NAND data loss. Our $49 diagnostic identifies the exact cause. Success rate for firmware-locked SSDs is approximately 75–85% depending on the brand, controller generation, and how many times the drive was rebooted after failure.
Does TRIM / garbage collection make SSD recovery impossible?
Not always. TRIM writes zeros to deleted blocks only when the drive is connected and the OS commands it. On a failed or offline SSD, TRIM has not run on those sectors. If the drive failed immediately after data loss or before TRIM executed those blocks, recovery is often still possible. The $49 diagnostic tells you exactly what was preserved on your specific drive.
How long does SSD data recovery take?
Logical SSD recovery: 24–48 hours. Firmware or controller recovery: 3–7 business days. Chip-level NAND extraction: 10–21 business days. Express <24h service available for $99.99 for urgent logical cases.
Can you recover data from an Apple MacBook SSD (T2 / Apple Silicon)?
Yes — MacBook SSDs with T2 chips or Apple Silicon (M1/M2/M3) use proprietary encryption tied to the Secure Enclave. If the board is partially functional, we can extract data using specialized Apple-specific tools. If the board is completely dead, chip-level recovery is the path — priced at $1,499. The $49 diagnostic determines which scenario applies to your MacBook.
Where can I bring my SSD for data recovery in Montreal?
IT Cares workshop is located at Rue Richmond, Montreal QC H3J 0C4. Open 7 days a week. You can also use our secure mail-in service if you’re outside Greater Montreal. Book online at itcares.ca/en/book.html or call 1 (888) 711-9428.
Is it possible to recover data from an external SSD?
Yes — external SSDs like the Samsung T7, WD My Passport SSD, SanDisk Extreme Pro, and LaCie Portable SSD are fully supported. Same pricing applies: $49 diagnostic + $349/$799/$1,499 depending on the failure type.
